In conjunction with SKINNER, Inc., the auction house, Boston’s inaugural wine auction was held on September 14, 2007, where 95% of lots were sold! Many of you are probably already aware that SKINNER has earned a deserved and lofty international reputation. As the interest in wine auctions has blossomed in the few cities where they exist, it is fitting and timely that such a service be available locally.
We see local wine auctions as bringing “liquidity” to the market. Collectors can consign their bottles, and buyers will have increased access to various labels. Additionally, for those already actively buying and selling, there is no need to deal with the logistics of moving inventory to and from NYC. In summary, all parties can achieve their goal in a more streamlined fashion.
Up through the mid ’90’s, if you wanted one of the more exclusive labels - or perhaps something with a touch of age - odds were fairly good, with a bit of patience, you could acquire it from the existing stock of local wholesalers. As the velocity of wine sales has increased, this traditional option has largely disappeared. Furthermore the “elusive” category has expanded beyond a mere handful of chateaux.
Thus there is a clear opportunity to match those individuals who hold stocks with others who may desire specific wines. If you are one of those folks, on either side of the equation, please announce yourself. Whether you have a precious single bottle, or a larger stash, we are eager to assist in any way that we can.
